The borax bead test identifies certain metal ions from the characteristic colour of the glassy bead formed when the metal salt reacts with molten borax.

A small amount of borax (Na2B4O7·10H2O) is taken on the loop of a platinum or nichrome wire and heated strongly in a Bunsen flame. On heating, borax loses its water of crystallisation and fuses to form a clear, colourless, glassy bead consisting of sodium metaborate and boric anhydride: Na2B4O7 → 2NaBO2 + B2O3.
