First law of thermodynamics = conservation of energy: ΔU = q + W.

From NCERT Class 11 Chemistry (Thermodynamics):

Statement:

The first law of thermodynamics states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, although it can be converted from one form to another. In other words, the total energy of an isolated system remains constant. It is essentially the law of conservation of energy.

Mathematical form:

For a closed system, if q is the heat supplied to the system and W is the work done on the system, then the change in internal energy ΔU is:

ΔU = q + W

Sign conventions (as per NCERT):

  • q is positive when heat is absorbed by the system, negative when released.
  • W is positive when work is done ON the system, negative when done BY the system.

For pressure–volume work at constant external pressure P, W = −PΔV, so:

ΔU = q − PΔV.
