Relative velocity of A w.r.t. B is v_AB = v_A − v_B; its value depends on whether the two velocities are along the same line, opposite, or at an angle.

Definition. The relative velocity of a body A with respect to another body B is the rate at which A appears to change its position as seen by an observer sitting on B. It is the vector difference of their velocities:

v⃗AB=v⃗A−v⃗B.\vec{v}_{AB} = \vec{v}_A - \vec{v}_B.

Different cases:

  1. Bodies moving in the same direction (parallel): if A and B move in the same direction with speeds v_A and v_B, then

    vAB=vA−vB.v_{AB} = v_A - v_B.

    The faster body appears to move slowly relative to the slower one; if v_A = v_B they appear at rest relative to each other.

  2. Bodies moving in opposite directions (anti-parallel): taking one direction positive,

    vAB=vA−(−vB)=vA+vB.v_{AB} = v_A - (-v_B) = v_A + v_B.

    The relative speed is the sum, so they approach or separate fast.

  3. Velocities inclined at an angle θ: the relative velocity is found by vector subtraction, …
