A thermopile (thermoelectric 'pile') is used to measure heat radiation.

A thermopile is a set of thermocouples joined in series. When heat radiation falls on its blackened junctions, a temperature difference is set up and a thermo-emf is produced, which is measured by a galvanometer. It is therefore used to detect and measure radiant heat (radiation).
