Beats = periodic variation in loudness from two close frequencies; number of beats per second = f₁ − f₂.

Beats: When two sound waves of nearly equal frequencies travel in the same direction and superpose, the resultant sound alternately grows loud and faint at regular intervals. This periodic variation in the intensity (loudness) of sound is called beats. One loud and one faint together make one beat.

Proof that beats per second = difference of frequencies: Let two waves of frequencies f₁ and f₂ (with f₁ slightly greater than f₂) and equal amplitude a reach a point. Their displacements are

y₁ = a sin 2πf₁t, y₂ = a sin 2πf₂t.

By superposition, y = y₁ + y₂ = a[sin 2πf₁t + sin 2πf₂t].

Using sinA + sinB = 2 sin((A+B)/2) cos((A−B)/2):

y = 2a cos[2π((f₁ − f₂)/2)t] · sin[2π((f₁ + f₂)/2)t].

This represents a wave of average frequency (f₁ + f₂)/2 whose amplitude, R = 2a cos[2π((f₁ − f₂)/2)t], varies slowly with time.
