A partnership firm is two or more persons agreeing to carry on a lawful business and share its profits; its chief features are agreement, two or more partners, lawful business for profit, profit-sharing, mutual agency and unlimited liability.

MEANING: According to the Indian Partnership Act, 1932, 'partnership is the relation between persons who have agreed to share the profits of a business carried on by all or any of them acting for all.' The persons are called partners and collectively they are called a firm; this is a popular form of organisation in the BSEB Inter / Bihar Class-12 Commerce syllabus (aligned with the NCERT/CBSE curriculum).

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS:

  1. Two or more persons — at least two persons are required to form a partnership.
  2. Agreement — it arises from an agreement (oral or written), not merely from status.
