A Cash Flow Statement shows cash inflows and outflows classified into operating, investing and financing activities; it is useful for judging liquidity, planning cash, explaining the profit-cash difference and assessing cash-generating ability.

MEANING: A Cash Flow Statement is a statement that depicts the changes in the cash and cash equivalents of an enterprise during an accounting period. It classifies all cash flows into three activities:

  • Operating activities — the main revenue-producing activities (e.g. cash from sales, payments to suppliers and employees),
  • Investing activities — purchase and sale of long-term assets and investments, and
  • Financing activities — changes in owners' capital and borrowings (issue of shares/debentures, repayment of loans, dividends).

It reconciles the opening and closing balances of cash and cash equivalents.

USES:
