Budgetary control is a technique in which budgets act as standards; actual results are compared with them and deviations are corrected.

A budget is a financial and quantitative statement of expected results for a future period (for example a sales budget, production budget or cash budget). Budgetary control uses these budgets to control operations through the following steps:

  1. Prepare budgets for each department/activity, which become the planned standards.
  2. Record actual performance as the period progresses.
  3. Compare actual performance with the budgeted figures to find variances (favourable or unfavourable).
  4. Analyse the variances to locate their causes and fix responsibility.
