Macroeconomics studies the economy as a whole using aggregates; its scope covers the theory of national income and employment, money and banking, general price level, economic growth, international trade and macroeconomic (fiscal/monetary) policy.

Meaning of Macroeconomics: The term macroeconomics comes from the Greek word 'macro' meaning large. Macroeconomics is the branch of economics that studies the economy as a whole rather than individual units. It deals with aggregates and averages such as national income, total output, total employment, aggregate demand and supply, and the general price level. It is also called the 'theory of income and employment' and was developed chiefly by J.M. Keynes.

Scope / subject matter of macroeconomics:

  1. Theory of national income — the concepts, measurement and components of national income (GDP, GNP, NNP, etc.).
  2. Theory of employment and income determination — how the levels of income, output and employment are determined by aggregate demand and aggregate supply, including the multiplier and problems of unemployment.
  3. Theory of money and banking — the supply and demand for money, functions of money, and the role of commercial banks and the central bank.
  4. Theory of general price level (inflation) — the causes and effects of changes in the general price level, inflation and deflation.
  5. Theory of economic growth and development — the long-run growth of national income and the factors behind it.
  6. Theory of international trade — balance of payments, foreign exchange and open-economy issues. …
