Money's main functions are its primary functions — medium of exchange and measure (unit) of value — and its secondary functions — store of value, standard of deferred payments, and (contingent) transfer of value. These overcome the difficulties of the barter system.

In the money and banking chapter (BSEB Class-12 Commerce Economics, NCERT/CBSE-aligned), money removes the problems of barter (such as lack of double coincidence of wants). Its main functions are:

A. Primary (main) functions:

  1. Medium of exchange — money is generally accepted in exchange for goods and services. It splits a single barter transaction into two easy parts (sale and purchase) and removes the need for a double coincidence of wants.

  2. Measure (unit) of value — money acts as a common unit in which the value/price of all goods and services is expressed and compared. This makes accounting and comparison easy.

B. Secondary (derivative) functions:

  1. Store of value — money is a convenient way to hold/save wealth for the future because it is durable and can be stored without much loss of value. It gives purchasing power over time.

  2. Standard of deferred payments — future payments and debts (loans, instalments, salaries) can be conveniently stated and settled in terms of money.
