A central bank is the apex monetary authority that regulates a country's banking and monetary system; its main functions are issuing currency, acting as banker to the government and to banks (lender of last resort), custodian of foreign exchange and gold, controller of credit, and clearing-house.

Definition of central bank: A central bank is the supreme (apex) monetary and banking institution of a country that controls, regulates and supervises the entire banking and monetary system and manages the currency and credit in the national interest. It does not aim at profit and works for the welfare of the economy. In India the central bank is the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), established in 1935.

Main functions of a central bank:

  1. Monopoly of note issue — the central bank has the sole right to issue currency notes, which ensures uniformity and public confidence in the currency and gives it control over money supply.
  2. Banker, agent and adviser to the government — it keeps the government's accounts, makes and receives payments on its behalf, manages public debt, and advises the government on economic and financial matters.
  3. Bankers' bank and lender of last resort — it acts as banker to the commercial banks, keeps their cash reserves, and provides them funds in times of need, thus serving as the 'lender of last resort'.
  4. Custodian of foreign exchange reserves — it holds and manages the country's reserves of gold and foreign currencies and maintains the stability of the external value of the currency. …
