Biopiracy refers to the use of bio-resources (plants, animals, microbes, genes) and the associated traditional knowledge of a country or ethnic community by multinational companies, organisations or other nations without proper authorisation from the concerned people or government, and without any compensatory payment.
Why it is a problem: developing and underdeveloped nations are rich in biodiversity and traditional knowledge about the medicinal and agricultural uses of their plants. Industrialised nations, being financially and technologically advanced, may exploit and even patent these resources and knowledge, depriving the original owners of any benefit.
Examples: attempts to patent products based on neem, turmeric (haldi) and basmati rice.
