ELISA stands for Enzyme-Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay. It is a sensitive immunological technique used in the early diagnosis of diseases:
-
Principle: It is based on the specific interaction between an antigen and its antibody.
-
Method: The patient's sample is added to a plate coated with the appropriate antigen or antibody. If the complementary antibody (or antigen) is present, it binds. A secondary antibody linked to an enzyme is then added.
-
Detection: A substrate for the enzyme is added; the enzyme converts it and produces a visible colour change. The intensity of the colour indicates the amount of antigen/antibody present.
