Ozone hole = severe thinning of stratospheric ozone (worst over Antarctica); it is caused mainly by CFCs releasing chlorine atoms that catalytically destroy ozone.

Ozone hole: The ozone hole refers to the large area of severe thinning (depletion) of the ozone layer in the stratosphere, observed most markedly over the Antarctic region. The ozone layer normally absorbs harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun; its depletion lets more UV-B reach the Earth's surface, causing skin cancer, cataract (snow blindness), and damage to plants and phytoplankton.

Main reasons for ozone depletion:

  • Emission of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) used in refrigerants, aerosol sprays and foams — the chief culprit.
  • Other ozone-depleting substances such as halons, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and methyl bromide, and oxides of nitrogen from high-altitude aircraft. …
