Global warming is the rise in Earth's average temperature due to accumulation of greenhouse gases, causing ice melt, sea-level rise and climate disruption.

Global warming is the gradual increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans. It is caused by the enhanced greenhouse effect: greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) trap the long-wave (infra-red) heat radiated by the Earth's surface and prevent it from escaping into space, warming the planet.

Main causes: burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, industrialisation and increasing vehicular emissions raise the concentration of these gases.

Effects of global warming:

  1. Melting of polar ice caps and glaciers.
  2. Rise in sea level, leading to submergence and flooding of low-lying coastal areas and islands.
  3. Changes in climate patterns and erratic, unpredictable rainfall causing droughts and floods. …
