The recapitulation (biogenetic) theory of Haeckel says 'ontogeny repeats phylogeny' — embryonic development retraces evolutionary ancestry.

The theory of recapitulation, also called the Biogenetic Law, was proposed by Ernst Haeckel. It is summed up in the phrase 'ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny', where ontogeny is the embryonic development of an individual and phylogeny is the evolutionary history of its race/ancestry.

Meaning: during its development from zygote to adult, an organism passes briefly through developmental stages that resemble the corresponding embryonic (ancestral) stages of its evolutionary ancestors. In other words, the embryo repeats, in a short and modified way, the evolutionary history of the group.

Evidence (embryological): the early embryos of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals look remarkably similar and all possess features such as gill slits (pharyngeal clefts) and a tail. These common embryonic features indicate descent from a common ancestor. In fish the gill slits persist and function, while in higher vertebrates they are transient and later modified or lost.
