Alcohol (ethanol) is a psychoactive depressant. Its excessive and habitual use has many ill effects on the individual and society:

Effects on the body:

  2. Liver: chronic drinking damages the liver, causing fatty liver and eventually cirrhosis, which can be fatal.
  3. Digestive system: it irritates the stomach lining, causing gastritis and ulcers, and reduces appetite leading to malnutrition.
  4. Heart and circulation: it can raise blood pressure and damage the heart.
  5. During pregnancy, alcohol harms the developing foetus (foetal alcohol syndrome).
