Innate immunity is the inborn, non-specific defence system providing four types of barriers against all invading pathogens.

Innate immunity (also called natural or non-specific immunity) is the type of defence that is present in an individual from birth. It is non-specific — it does not distinguish between different pathogens and acts against all of them in the same general way — and it provides the first line of defence.

Innate immunity operates through four types of barriers:

  1. Physical barriers: the skin and the mucous membranes lining the respiratory, digestive and urinogenital tracts prevent the entry of microbes.

  2. Physiological barriers: acid in the stomach, saliva in the mouth, tears in the eyes and lysozyme in secretions destroy or prevent the growth of microbes.
