T- and B-lymphocytes both arise from bone-marrow stem cells; T-cells mature in the thymus and B-cells in the bone marrow.

Lymphocytes are the key cells of specific (acquired) immunity. Both types originate from the same source but mature in different organs:

  1. Origin: all lymphocytes are produced from haematopoietic (pluripotent) stem cells in the bone marrow.

  2. T-lymphocytes (T-cells): some precursor cells leave the bone marrow and migrate to the thymus gland, where they mature into T-lymphocytes (T stands for thymus-derived). They are responsible for cell-mediated immunity (CMI) and also help regulate the immune response.
