A sperm has a head (nucleus + acrosome cap), a neck (with two centrioles), a middle piece (spiral of mitochondria = energy) and a long tail/flagellum for swimming — all covered by plasma membrane.

A mammalian spermatozoon is a highly specialised, motile male gamete. Structurally it is divided into four parts:

  1. Head — Made largely of the haploid, condensed nucleus. Its anterior tip is covered by a cap-like acrosome, which contains hydrolytic (lytic) enzymes that help the sperm penetrate the egg's coverings (zona pellucida) at fertilisation.

  2. Neck — A short region behind the head containing the proximal and distal centrioles; the distal centriole gives rise to the axial filament (axoneme) of the tail.

  3. Middle piece — Contains numerous mitochondria arranged in a spiral (mitochondrial sheath) around the axial filament. These mitochondria produce the ATP energy needed for sperm movement.
