Sewage = organic-rich municipal waste water; microbes decompose its organic matter — aerobes reduce BOD in secondary treatment, anaerobes digest sludge into biogas.

Sewage: It is the municipal waste water carried by sewers, containing large amounts of human excreta, organic matter, suspended solids and numerous pathogenic (disease-causing) micro-organisms. Because of its heavy organic load it cannot be discharged into natural water bodies untreated.

Role of microbes in sewage treatment:

  1. Primary treatment — mainly physical (filtration, sedimentation) to remove floating and settleable solids; forms the primary sludge and effluent.
  2. Secondary / biological treatment — the primary effluent is aerated in tanks where vigorous aerobic bacteria and fungi grow as flocs and consume/oxidise most of the organic matter, greatly reducing the BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) of the water. …
