Microbes are microscopic organisms with wide uses — food, medicine, industry, sewage treatment, biogas and agriculture.

Microbes are microscopic organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eye — they include bacteria, fungi (yeast, moulds), protozoa, microscopic algae and viruses. They occur everywhere, even in extreme habitats.

Role of microbes in human welfare:

  1. In household products: Lactobacillus converts milk to curd; yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is used to make bread (leavening), and to ferment beverages like beer and wine; Propionibacterium ripens Swiss cheese.
  2. In industry (fermentation): production of ethanol, antibiotics (penicillin from Penicillium), organic acids (citric acid by Aspergillus niger), enzymes (lipase, pectinase, streptokinase) and vitamins.
  3. In medicine: antibiotics like penicillin, and cyclosporin-A (immunosuppressant from Trichoderma) and statins (blood-cholesterol lowering from Monascus).
  4. In sewage treatment: aerobic and anaerobic microbes decompose organic waste in sewage treatment plants, cleaning the water. …
