HGP mapped all the genes of humans: ~3 billion base pairs, ~30,000 genes, >99.9% identical among people, and <2% of the DNA actually codes for proteins.

The Human Genome Project (1990–2003) was an international effort to sequence and map the entire human genome. Four salient features (findings):

  1. The human genome has approximately 3 × 10⁹ (3 billion) nucleotide base pairs.

  2. The genome contains about 30,000 genes — far fewer than earlier estimates.

  3. The average gene consists of about 3,000 bases; sizes vary greatly (e.g. dystrophin gene is the largest, ~2.4 million bases). More than 99.9% of the nucleotide bases are exactly the same in all human beings.
