Camouflage is cryptic coloration/shape that lets an organism merge with its surroundings and avoid being detected by predators or prey.

Camouflage is a form of protective adaptation. Many prey species evolve a body colour, pattern or shape that closely resembles their immediate surroundings, so that they become very difficult to spot. Because the animal is not easily seen, it is protected from being caught and eaten by predators; similarly, some predators use camouflage to approach prey unnoticed.
