An explant is the piece of plant tissue/organ removed and cultured on nutrient medium to grow a new plant (in tissue culture / micropropagation).

In plant tissue culture, whole plants can be regenerated from a small part of a plant because of the totipotency of plant cells (the capacity of a cell to generate a whole plant).

Explant:
