Anhydrous CaCl2 forms an addition compound CaCl2·4C2H5OH with ethanol, so it removes the alcohol itself rather than acting as a drying agent.

A drying agent must remove water without reacting with the substance being dried. Anhydrous calcium chloride is an excellent desiccant for many liquids because it absorbs water.

However, with ethyl alcohol (ethanol) it fails, because CaCl2 reacts chemically with the alcohol: the lone pair on the oxygen of the -OH group coordinates to Ca2+, forming a stable crystalline addition/molecular compound:

CaCl2 + 4C2H5OH -> CaCl2·4C2H5OH
