Rectified spirit is the ~95.6% ethanol–4.4% water azeotrope obtained by fractional distillation of fermented liquor; it boils constantly at ~78.1 °C and cannot be purified further by simple distillation.

When a fermented sugar/molasses solution (wash) is fractionally distilled, ethanol and water form a constant-boiling (azeotropic) mixture containing about 95.6% ethanol and 4.4% water by mass, boiling at about 78.1 °C. This mixture is called rectified spirit (commercial alcohol).
