Cannizzaro reaction: an aldehyde with no α-hydrogen, treated with concentrated alkali, disproportionates — one molecule is reduced to an alcohol and another is oxidised to a carboxylic acid salt. e.g. 2HCHO --conc. NaOH--> CH3OH + HCOONa.

Cannizzaro's reaction:

  • It is a disproportionation (self oxidation–reduction) reaction shown by aldehydes that do NOT contain an alpha-hydrogen atom (i.e. no H on the carbon next to the C=O).
  • When such an aldehyde is heated with a concentrated solution of a strong base (NaOH or KOH), two molecules react together:
    • One molecule is reduced to the corresponding primary alcohol.
    • The other molecule is oxidised to the corresponding carboxylic acid (obtained as its salt in the basic medium).

General equation:

2 R–CHO + NaOH (conc.) → R–CH2OH + R–COONa

(where R–CHO has no α-hydrogen)

Examples:

  1. Formaldehyde: 2HCHO + NaOH → CH3OH (methanol) + HCOONa (sodium formate)
  2. Benzaldehyde: …
