Fehling's solution is a freshly mixed alkaline Cu2+ tartrate complex (Fehling A + Fehling B) used to detect aldehydes; a positive test gives a red precipitate of Cu2O.

Composition:

  • Fehling A: aqueous copper(II) sulphate, CuSO4.
  • Fehling B: alkaline solution of sodium potassium tartrate (Rochelle salt) in NaOH. Equal volumes are mixed just before use, giving a deep-blue solution in which the tartrate keeps Cu2+ in solution as a complex.

Use / reaction: On warming with an aldehyde, the blue Cu2+ is reduced to Cu(I) and forms a red-brown precipitate of cuprous oxide:

RCHO + 2Cu2+ + 5OH- → RCOO- + Cu2O(red↓) + 3H2O
