LiAlH4 reduces an amide to a primary amine: R–CONH2 → R–CH2–NH2.

Lithium aluminium hydride (LiAlH4) is a powerful reducing agent. It reduces the amide group (—CO—NH2) by converting the carbonyl carbon (C=O) into a —CH2— group, while the nitrogen is retained. The result is a primary amine having the same number of carbons:

R–C(=O)–NH2 --(i) LiAlH4 (ii) H2O--> R–CH2–NH2
