A primary amine has active N-H bonds that decompose the Grignard reagent to give an alkane.

Grignard reagents (R-MgX) are strong bases and react with any compound containing an active (acidic) hydrogen — such as -OH, -NH2 or -NH-. A primary amine R'-NH2 has N-H bonds, so it protonates the R-MgX:

R-MgX + R'-NH2 → R-H + R'-NH-MgX
