A reaction that is really second order but follows first-order kinetics because one reactant (water) is in huge excess and effectively constant; e.g. acid hydrolysis of ethyl acetate.

Definition: A pseudo first order reaction is a reaction which is truly of the second (or higher) order but experimentally follows first-order kinetics because one of the reactants is taken in such large excess that its concentration hardly changes during the reaction.

Example — acid-catalysed hydrolysis of ethyl acetate:

CH3COOC2H5 + H2O --(H+)--> CH3COOH + C2H5OH

The true rate = k[CH3COOC2H5][H2O]. But water is the solvent and present in huge excess, so [H2O] is essentially constant. Then

Rate = k[H2O][ester] = k'[ester], where k' = k[H2O] = constant.
