Both BOD and COD are indicators of the level of organic pollution in a water sample.
-
BOD (Biochemical/Biological Oxygen Demand): the amount of dissolved oxygen consumed by microorganisms (bacteria) in decomposing the biodegradable organic matter present in a given volume of water, usually over 5 days at 20°C. Clean water has low BOD; polluted water has high BOD.
-
COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand): the amount of oxygen required to chemically oxidise the total organic matter (both biodegradable and non-biodegradable) in water, using a strong oxidising agent. COD is always equal to or greater than BOD.
