The salt bridge completes the circuit and maintains electrical neutrality of the two half-cell solutions by allowing ions to migrate, so the cell keeps working.

In a galvanic (electrochemical) cell the two half-cells are joined by a salt bridge — a U-tube filled with a paste of an inert strong electrolyte (KCl, KNO3 or NH4NO3) in agar-agar/gelatin.

Functions:

  1. Completes the circuit — it provides the internal path for the flow of current (by movement of ions) between the two half-cells, so that the circuit is complete along with the external wire.
  2. Maintains electrical neutrality — as the reaction proceeds, positive ions accumulate in the anode compartment and negative ions in the cathode compartment. The salt bridge supplies anions to the anode side and cations to the cathode side, neutralising this build-up of charge. …
