Colligative properties (relative lowering of vapour pressure, elevation of boiling point, depression of freezing point, osmotic pressure) depend on the NUMBER of solute particles in solution. Molar masses determined from them assume the solute neither dissociates nor associates. When this assumption fails, the calculated molar mass differs from the true value and is called an ABNORMAL MOLECULAR MASS.
Two cases arise:
- Dissociation (e.g. electrolytes like NaCl, KCl): the solute splits into ions, increasing the number of particles. The colligative effect is larger than expected, so the OBSERVED molar mass comes out LOWER than the true value. Example: NaCl → Na⁺ + Cl⁻ gives nearly twice the particles, so its apparent mass is about half.
- Association (e.g. carboxylic acids like benzoic acid or acetic acid in benzene): solute molecules join into dimers, decreasing the number of particles. The colligative effect is smaller than expected, so the OBSERVED molar mass comes out HIGHER than the true value. …
