Elevation of boiling point (ΔTb) is the rise in a solvent's boiling point on adding a non-volatile solute; it is colligative and equals Kb·m.

When a non-volatile solute is dissolved in a solvent, the vapour pressure of the solution is lower than that of the pure solvent (Raoult's law). A liquid boils when its vapour pressure becomes equal to the external (atmospheric) pressure. Because the solution has a lower vapour pressure, it must be heated to a higher temperature than the pure solvent before its vapour pressure reaches atmospheric pressure. Thus the solution boils at a higher temperature.

The difference between the boiling point of the solution (Tb) and that of the pure solvent (Tb°) is called the elevation of boiling point:

ΔTb = Tb - Tb°
