(a) Contact process: catalytic oxidation of SO2 to SO3, absorption in conc. H2SO4 to oleum, then dilution. (b) Conc. H2SO4 acts as a dehydrating agent on oxalic acid to give CO, CO2 and water.

(a) Manufacture of sulphuric acid by the Contact process — principle and steps:

  1. Production of SO2 by burning sulphur or roasting sulphide ores:

    S + O2 → SO2 (or 4FeS2 + 11O2 → 2Fe2O3 + 8SO2)

  2. Catalytic oxidation of SO2 to SO3 (the key step). This is a reversible, exothermic reaction:

    2SO2(g) + O2(g) ⇌ 2SO3(g); ΔH = -ve

    Catalyst: V2O5 (vanadium pentoxide); Temperature ~ 450 °C; Pressure ~ 2 atm.

By Le Chatelier's principle, a moderate temperature, slightly raised pressure and excess air push the equilibrium towards SO3.

  3. Absorption of SO3: SO3 is not absorbed directly in water (it forms a dense mist). Instead it is absorbed in conc. H2SO4 to give oleum (pyrosulphuric acid):

    SO3 + H2SO4 → H2S2O7 (oleum)
