Point defects are localized irregularities around a lattice point in a crystal.

An ideal crystal has a perfectly ordered arrangement of particles at every lattice site. Real crystals contain imperfections. When the irregularity is localized around a point (i.e. around an atom or ion at a lattice site), it is called a point defect.

Point defects are broadly of three types:

  1. Stoichiometric defects — do not disturb the stoichiometry (ratio of ions). These include:
    • Vacancy defect (a lattice site is empty),
    • Interstitial defect (a particle occupies an interstitial site),
    • Schottky defect (equal numbers of cations and anions missing — density decreases),
    • Frenkel defect (an ion is displaced from its lattice site to an interstitial site — density unchanged). …
