A hot-wire ammeter measures the RMS value of AC.

A hot-wire ammeter works on the heating effect of current: the wire's expansion depends on the heat produced, H∝I2RtH \propto I^2 R t. Because the heating depends on I2I^2 (independent of the current's direction), the deflection responds to the average of I2I^2, i.e. the mean-square current. The scale is therefore calibrated to read its square root — the root-mean-square (RMS) value:

Irms=I02.I_{rms} = \frac{I_0}{\sqrt{2}}.
