Joule heating H=I2RtH=I^2Rt; power P=VI=I2RP=VI=I^2R (rate of energy) and energy W=Pt=VItW=Pt=VIt (total work done).

Heat produced in a conductor (Joule's law of heating):

Consider a conductor of resistance RR carrying a steady current II under a potential difference VV for time tt.

Step 1: Charge flowing in time tt is q=Itq=It.

Step 2: Work done in moving this charge through p.d. VV is

W=qV=(It)V=VIt.W=qV=(It)V=VIt.

Step 3: This electrical work is converted entirely into heat, so

H=VIt.H=VIt.

Step 4: Using Ohm's law V=IRV=IR,

 H=I2Rt=V2Rt=VIt  (in joules).\boxed{\ H=I^2Rt=\frac{V^2}{R}t=VIt\ }\ \text{(in joules).}

This is Joule's law of heating: heat produced is proportional to (i) I2I^2, (ii) RR, and (iii) time tt.

Electric power: Electric power is the rate at which electrical work is done (or the rate at which energy is consumed):

P=Wt=VItt=VI=I2R=V2R.P=\frac{W}{t}=\frac{VIt}{t}=VI=I^2R=\frac{V^2}{R}.

SI unit: watt (W) = joule per second. 1 horsepower = 746 W.
