Ohmic conductors give a straight-line V–I graph (constant resistance, obey Ohm's law); non-ohmic conductors give a curved V–I graph (resistance varies). Example: metal wire (ohmic) vs. p–n junction diode (non-ohmic).

Ohmic resistances. A conductor is said to be ohmic if it obeys Ohm's law, i.e. the current II through it is directly proportional to the applied potential difference VV (at constant temperature):

V=IR,R=constant.V = IR, \qquad R = \text{constant}.

Its VV–II graph is a straight line through the origin.

Example: a metallic conductor such as a nichrome or copper wire.
