A photo-cell (photoelectric cell) works on the photoelectric effect: incident light ejects electrons from a photosensitive cathode, giving a photocurrent proportional to light intensity. Used in automatic control (alarms, street lights) and in sound reproduction/light metering.

What is a photo-cell?

A photo-cell is a device that converts light energy directly into electrical energy. It consists of an evacuated (or gas-filled) glass bulb containing a photosensitive metal cathode (usually a curved plate coated with an alkali metal such as caesium) and a small anode. When light of frequency above the threshold falls on the cathode, electrons are emitted (photoelectric effect) and are collected by the anode, producing a current. The photocurrent increases with the intensity of the incident light.

Two applications:

  1. Automatic switching / alarms — burglar alarms, fire alarms, automatic door openers and automatic street-light switches: a change in light falling on the cell changes the current, which operates a relay. …
