Electric field intensity E = F/q₀ (force per unit positive charge); SI unit = N/C (= V/m).

Definition: The intensity of the electric field (electric field strength) at any point is defined as the force experienced by a unit positive test charge placed at that point. If a small positive test charge q₀ placed at the point experiences a force F, then the electric field intensity is

E⃗=F⃗q0\vec{E} = \frac{\vec{F}}{q_0}

It is a vector quantity directed along the force on a positive charge. (Strictly, we take the limit q₀ → 0 so that the test charge does not disturb the source charges.)
