An induction coil produces a high (induced) voltage.

An induction coil (Ruhmkorff coil) has a primary of few turns and a secondary of very many turns wound on an iron core. A make-and-break interrupter repeatedly switches the primary current on and off, producing a rapidly changing flux. By Faraday's law the large number of secondary turns gives a very large induced emf:

εs=−Nsdϕdt.\varepsilon_s = -N_s\frac{d\phi}{dt}.
