Diamagnetic: weakly repelled, χ small negative. Paramagnetic: weakly attracted, χ small positive. Ferromagnetic: strongly attracted, χ large positive, retains magnetism.

Magnetic materials are classified by their behaviour in an external magnetic field, described by susceptibility χ\chi and relative permeability μr=1+χ\mu_r = 1 + \chi.

1. Diamagnetic materials (e.g. bismuth, copper, water, gold):

  • Weakly repelled by a magnet; move from a stronger to a weaker field region.
  • No permanent atomic magnetic moment; a small moment is induced opposite to the applied field.
  • Susceptibility χ\chi is small and negative; relative permeability μr\mu_r slightly less than 1.
  • Field lines are pushed out of the material; behaviour is independent of temperature.

2. Paramagnetic materials (e.g. aluminium, sodium, platinum, oxygen):

  • Weakly attracted by a magnet; move from weaker to stronger field.
  • Atoms have a permanent magnetic moment; these align along the applied field.
  • Susceptibility χ\chi is small and positive; μr\mu_r slightly greater than 1.
  • Magnetisation decreases with rise in temperature (Curie's law χ∝1/T\chi \propto 1/T).

3. Ferromagnetic materials (e.g. iron, cobalt, nickel, gadolinium):

  • Strongly attracted by a magnet. …
