The earth's magnetism at a place is fixed by three magnetic elements — declination, dip, and horizontal component. Declination is the angle between true north and magnetic north; dip is the angle the earth's field makes with the horizontal.

The magnetic elements of the earth are the quantities needed to completely specify the earth's magnetic field at any location. Two of them are defined below.

1. Angle of declination (D).

At any place a vertical plane containing the geographic north–south line is the geographic meridian, and the vertical plane containing the freely-suspended magnetic needle is the magnetic meridian. The declination is the angle between the geographic meridian and the magnetic meridian — i.e. the angle between the direction of true (geographic) north and the direction shown by a compass (magnetic north).
