A cyclotron accelerates charged particles to high energy by making them spiral between two 'dees' under a magnetic field while an oscillating voltage kicks them across the gap. It cannot accelerate electrons/neutral particles, and relativistic mass increase eventually spoils the resonance.

What is a cyclotron?

A cyclotron is a machine used to accelerate positively charged particles (protons, deuterons, α-particles) to very high kinetic energies. It uses a strong, uniform magnetic field (perpendicular to the plane of motion) to bend the particles into a circular path, and a high-frequency alternating electric field applied across the gap between two hollow D-shaped electrodes ('dees') to give the particle an energy boost each time it crosses the gap. The particle spirals outward with increasing radius, gaining energy on each half-revolution. The cyclotron frequency f=qB2πmf = \dfrac{qB}{2\pi m} is independent of the particle's speed and radius (in the non-relativistic regime), which is what keeps the accelerating voltage in resonance with the particle.

Two limitations:

  1. It cannot accelerate electrons or neutral particles. Electrons have very small mass, so they attain relativistic speeds almost immediately, and their period changes — resonance is lost. Neutral particles experience no magnetic force at all. …
