Beta rays are fast electrons; negatively charged, moderate penetration, low ionising power.

Two properties of beta (β) rays:

  1. Nature and charge. Beta rays are streams of high-speed electrons (β⁻) emitted from the nucleus during beta decay. They carry a negative charge (−e) and hence are deflected by both electric and magnetic fields — they bend towards the positive plate. Their speed can be a large fraction of the speed of light.

  2. Penetrating and ionising power. Beta rays have moderate penetrating power — greater than alpha rays but much less than gamma rays; they can pass through a few millimetres of aluminium. Their ionising power is low, roughly one-hundredth that of alpha rays.
