Half-life is the time for half the radioactive nuclei to decay; it relates to the decay constant by T1/2=0.693/λT_{1/2} = 0.693/\lambda.

Definition. The half-life T1/2T_{1/2} of a radioactive substance is the time interval during which the number of undecayed (radioactive) nuclei falls to one-half of its initial number.

Derivation of the relation. The law of radioactive decay is

N=N0e−λt,N = N_0 e^{-\lambda t},

where N0N_0 is the initial number of nuclei, NN the number remaining after time tt, and λ\lambda the decay constant.

At t=T1/2t = T_{1/2}, N=N0/2N = N_0/2. Substituting:

N02=N0e−λT1/2  ⟹  12=e−λT1/2.\frac{N_0}{2} = N_0 e^{-\lambda T_{1/2}} \implies \frac{1}{2} = e^{-\lambda T_{1/2}}.
