Total magnification of a compound microscope = objective linear magnification × eyepiece angular magnification: M=Lfo(1+Dfe)M = \dfrac{L}{f_o}\left(1+\dfrac{D}{f_e}\right).

A compound microscope has two converging lenses: an objective (small focal length fof_o) near the object, and an eyepiece (focal length fef_e) near the eye. The total magnifying power is the product of the magnifications produced by each lens.

Magnification by the objective. The object is placed just beyond fof_o; the objective forms a real, magnified, inverted image A′B′ inside the tube. Its linear magnification is

mo=vouo≈Lfom_o = \frac{v_o}{u_o} \approx \frac{L}{f_o}

where LL is the tube length (image distance, approximately the separation of the lenses), since for an object close to the focus vo≈Lv_o \approx L and uo≈fou_o \approx f_o.

Magnification by the eyepiece. The eyepiece acts as a simple microscope for the intermediate image A′B′, which lies within its focal length. For the final image formed at the least distance of distinct vision DD (near point), the angular magnification of the eyepiece is

me=1+Dfem_e = 1 + \frac{D}{f_e}
